Buying cattle · Gitaway Farm

Look beyond the photo when choosing cattle.

Good questions help you find an animal that fits your plans and your setup.

Explain what you want the animal for

Start with your intended use, your experience, and the setup you have. A beautiful photograph can start a conversation, but it cannot establish whether an animal suits your goals.

Ask about the individual animal

Request the animal’s age, sex, background, identification, and current status. Ask which details are documented. If registration or breeding information matters to your purchase, request the relevant records rather than assuming them from appearance.

Discuss handling and your facilities

Ask how the animal is usually handled and what the seller has observed. Explain your fencing, loading arrangements, and experience. Individual animals differ; a breed name or a friendly photo is not a guarantee of temperament.

Get records and logistics settled

Discuss available health records with the seller and ask your veterinarian which checks or transport documents apply to your situation. Confirm price, payment, collection, and any written sale terms before committing.
